Referenced Biography: John Leland (1754-1841)
John Leland led Baptists in Virginia in the struggle for religious freedom. He ardently opposed the idea that the United States was a Christian commonwealth and fervently championed separating church and state.
He wrote: “No national church can in its organization, be the Gospel Church. A National church takes in the whole Nation, and no more; whereas, the Gospel Church, takes in no Nation, but those who fear God, and work righteousness in every Nation. The notion of a Christian commonwealth should be exploded forever. . . . If all the souls in a government were saints of God, should they be formed into a society by law, that society could not be a Gospel Church, but a creature of state.”

“Water Baptism” Acts 8:5,12,26-40; 1 Peter 3:21; Acts 2:38-46; Matthew 28:18-20
Question: Why should you be baptized?
Requirements for Scriptural Water Baptism:
1) A Proper Administrator: a man called and sent of God
2) A Proper Subject: a born again child of God, as evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit in his life
3) A Proper Motive: A belief in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as stated by the Ethiopian Eunuch, “….and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” (Acts 8:36-37)
4) The Proper Mode: immersion (burial) in water ” …….and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. (Acts 8:38-39)

Parakletos (par-ak’-lay-tos): A Greek word that translates into English as “an intercessor, consoler:—advocate, comforter” Or “One who stands beside you as a helper.”
1) “….we have an advocate (Parakletos) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”
2) ” …And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (Parakletos), that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive …”
3) “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” We are to be a parakletos to each other; we are to stand beside our brothers or sisters as their helpers, comforters, and intercessors (praying) for them in their time of need.
“Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.“
