First Sunday in October at Oxford PBC

David Bass opened services by reading from Phil 4:4-8 and stating that verse 8 had a special meaning to him because his mother had shared it with him years ago.

Philippians 4:8  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Keith West read from the 13th through 16 chapters of Judges speaking very ably concerning the Life of Samson.

Judges 15:20 “And he (Samson) judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

Judges 16:30  “And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.”

Trusting In & Having Courage In God

randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy opened services by reading from Ephesians 1:3-11 and Romans 8:28-29 and spoke briefly about predestination.  God predestined, or determined beforehand, the destiny of His people before the creation of the world.  This destiny includes the facts that we would be adopted as God’s children, that we would have an eternal inheritance, and that we would be conformed to the image and glory of His Son Jesus Christ.

Trusting in God

Keith preached on how the Scriptures teach us to trust God.  He noted that our national motto (“In God We Trust”) is present on the currency of the United States.  To trust God means that we need to believe that He is able and willing to do what He has promised.  He observed that since God created everything (Gen 1:1), it is not difficult for Him to do other things within His creation.  Keith brought to mind three important characters who were presented with challenges of faith and who reacted in different ways (Zechariah, Luke 1:11-20; Mary, Luke 1:26-38; and Joseph, Matt 1:18-25).  Keith encouraged us to be faithful to God’s promises even when we don’t understand how He will fulfill them.

Having Courage in God

Mark followed up with the same theme by examining the life of Joshua.  Joshua had been present during all the great works that God did through Moses in redeeming the nation of Israel from Egypt, giving them the Law and Tabernacle service, and providing for them in the wilderness.  Nevertheless, it was something else when it became apparent that Joshua, not Moses, would be the one leading the people into the promised land.  Both Moses and God told Joshua to “be strong and of a good courage.” Deut 31:7; Josh 1:6; Josh 1:9).  Most importantly, Mark pointed out that God further said to Joshua, “Have I not commanded thee?”  Mark encouraged us that, just like Joshua, if God commands us to do something, He will most certainly give us the grace and power to carry out His tasks.

5th Sunday March – Keith / Mark / Randy

Keith WestKeith West

Topic:  Christianity Portrayal in the Media

Keith discusses how Christianity is portrayed in today’s media, and contrasts two recent films, one of which remains faithful to Scripture and one that does not.  Keith encouraged us to study our bibles diligently so that we will not take false presentations of the Scriptures and believe them to be true, which happens to many in today’s culture.

markwMark Wattenbarger

Topic:  Spiritual Warfare

Mark discussed the spiritual warfare of believers (2 Corinthians 10:4).  There is much in the world with which to disagree.  However, Scripture teaches the Christian does not fight sin and deception in the same manner, and with the same weapons, with which the world fights.  It is a battle for the mind, and every thought should be obedient to God’s will just like our every action.

randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy

Topic:  Luke Chapter 15

Randy presented an overview of Luke 15 including the parables of the lost sheep, the lost silver piece and the prodigal son.  While these parables teach the beauty of God’s grace in His willingness to seek and save that which was lost, Randy stressed that these parables are really about our reaction when God blesses someone else.  We should not be like the resentful older brother, but instead we should rejoice as the angels in heaven do when God extends mercy to a sinner.
