Liberty, Freedom & John Leland

Subject: “Liberty, Freedom & John Leland

Galatians 5:1  “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

Question: Is America a Christian Nation?

Hebrews 13:1-2  Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

John 13:34-35  “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

U. S. Constitution – Amendment 1“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

John Leland led Baptists in Virginia in the struggle for religious freedom.  He ardently opposed the idea that the United States was a Christian commonwealth and fervently championed separating church and state.

He wrote:  “No national church can in its organization, be the Gospel Church.  A National church takes in the whole Nation, and no more; whereas, the Gospel Church, takes in no Nation, but those who fear God, and work righteousness in every Nation.  The notion of a Christian commonwealth should be exploded forever. . . . If all the souls in a government were saints of God, should they be formed into a society by law, that society could not be a Gospel Church, but a creature of state.”

The Comforter (Three Parakletos)

randyMc_1_cropBrother Randy opened the service by reading the 3rd Chapter of Zechariah, speaking about “The Vision of Zechariah”   Zechariah 3:1-10

Sermon:  “Three Parakletos”  1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:1-2; John 1:36-51; John 14:15-17; John 20:10-18; Gal 6:1-2; John 2:1-11

Parakletos (par-ak’-lay-tos):  A Greek word that translates into English as “an intercessor, consoler:—advocate, comforter”  Or “One who stands beside you as a helper.”

1)  “….we have an advocate (Parakletos) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”

2)  ” …And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (Parakletos), that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive …”

3)  “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”  We are to be a parakletos to each other; we are to stand beside our brothers or sisters as their  helpers, comforters, and intercessors (praying) for them in their time of need.

Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Eight Scriptural references concerning the healings of Jesus:  Matt 9:22; Matt 15:28; Mark 10:52; Luke 17:19; Luke 5:20-24; Luke 7:47-50; Matt 8:2-3; Luke 7:6-9

God will bless us (in the same manner) if we place our faith and trust in Him.  The application of these principles are seen in Paul’s teachings in Ephesians 3:8-21.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”

Deut 30:1-10; Eph 3:8-21

“That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”  Ephesians 3:16-21
