Jesus, High Priest (by the Order of Melchizedek)

Randy McCarthy examines the priesthood of Jesus Christ, with reference to His call by God in Psalm 110:4 as a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. After reviewing the history of Abraham’s encounter with this mysterious priest-king in Genesis 14, Randy examines Hebrews 4:14-5:10 and notes the following characteristics of Christ’s priesthood that are foreshadowed by Melchizedek:

a perpetual priesthood;
one that is appointed by an oath of God;
a royal priesthood – that is, Christ is a Priest-King;
there is no priestly descent or succession with Christ;
the blessing of Abraham by Melchizedek shows the superiority of Christ’s priesthood to that of the Levitical priesthood under the Mosaic Law;
Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, further showing the superiority of Christ’s priesthood to the Levitical priesthood; and
Melchizedek refreshed Abraham with bread and wine, signifying the refreshment that Christ brings us as He ministers His priestly office.

Bill McCarthy speaks of his experiences in the church, with focus upon John 10:10, where the Lord Jesus says, “I am come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Bill talks about how that the abundant life Jesus came to give us is that which we experience in this world by following Him.

Randy McCarthy examines Psalm 45 and outlines this classical romance of a Warrior-King who fights a battle to rescue his beloved woman, whom He marries and lives with in joy forever. Randy points out how this fairy tale theme finds its reality in Christ Jesus, who rescued his people and will take them home to live with him in all eternity.

Mark – A Nation on Our Knees

Brother Mark reads the letter from Jeremiah to the Israelite population in Babylon from Jeremiah Chapter 29 and reminds us of the prophet’s message to God’s people who were carried away by that wicked empire. He draws a parallel to our own time and plainly declares God’s people today are also in captivity and it is once again a captivity of our own making. However, for God’s people there is always hope even in the midst of a perverse generation.
