randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy  Malachi 1:1-14

“The Book of Malachi is like a bridge between the Old Testament and the New. It was a time of restoration for God’s people. The Sovereignty of God is set forth greatly in this book. The Book of Malachi is quoted from six times in the New Testament and was a favorite of the Apostle Paul.”

Liberty in Jesus

randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy introduces services by reading Philippians 1:1-11. In this thank you note written to the Church at Philippi, Paul rejoices in the fellowship in Christ Jesus he has enjoyed with the saints there, and the joy they have had together in the Lord.  Paul identifies four areas in which he encourages the church to continue to grow in their devotion to Christ: to abound in love, to approve those things that are excellent, to be sincere and without offense, and to be filled with the fruits of righteousness.

markwMark Wattenbarger speaks of the liberty that we have in Christ Jesus, teaching from Galatians 3:1-5.  Mark echoes Paul’s charge that it is “foolish” to think that we can add to, or in any way contribute to, the eternal redemption that has been given us through the perfect work of Jesus Christ the Lord.  Instead, God has called us to walk in righteousness as a result of the great gift of God’s Son.

Prophecy of the Birth of Jesus

randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy reads about the birth of the Lord Jesus as set forth in the gospels of Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2.  In these accounts, Randy outlines 16 different Old Testament Prophecies that were fulfilled by the coming of Christ, the promised Messiah (King):

  1. the coming of a herald (John the Baptist) to announce the advent of the Messiah – Malachi 4:5-6
  2. the Messiah would come in the form of a human child, who would be the Son of God  – Isaiah 9:6;
  3. the Messiah would be born of a virgin – Isaiah 7:14;
  4. the Messiah would be the son of Abraham – Gen 17:7-8;
  5. the Messiah would be the son of Issac – Gen 22:17-18;
  6. the Messiah would be the son of Jacob – Gen 26:3;
  7. the Messiah would be the son of Judah – Gen 49:10;
  8. the Messiah would be the son of Jesse – Isaiah 11:5;
  9. the Messiah would be the son of David and sit on his father’s throne – Isaiah 9:7; Isaiah 16:5;
  10. the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem of Judah – Micah 5:2;
  11. angels would rejoice in His birth – Psalm 97:7;
  12. the Messiah would be a light unto the Gentiles and the glory of His people Israel – Isaiah 42;
  13. Gentile kings would come and honor the Messiah – Isaiah 60:3;
  14. the birth of Messiah would trigger the slaughter of children in the vicinity of Bethlehem – Jeremiah 31:15;
  15. God would call His Son from Egypt – Hosea 11:1; and
  16. the Messiah would be called a Nazarene – Isaiah 9:1-2; Isaiah 11:10.

Jesus, High Priest (by the Order of Melchizedek)

randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy examines the priesthood of Jesus Christ, with reference to His call by God in Psalm 110:4 as a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.  After reviewing the history of Abraham’s encounter with this mysterious priest-king in Genesis 14, Randy examines Hebrews 4:14-5:10 and notes the following characteristics of Christ’s priesthood that are foreshadowed by Melchizedek:

  1. a perpetual priesthood;
  2. one that is appointed by an oath of God;
  3. a royal priesthood – that is, Christ is a Priest-King;
  4. there is no priestly descent or succession with Christ;
  5. the blessing of Abraham by Melchizedek shows the superiority of Christ’s priesthood to that of the Levitical priesthood under the Mosaic Law;
  6. Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, further showing the superiority of Christ’s priesthood to the Levitical priesthood; and
  7. Melchizedek refreshed Abraham with bread and wine, signifying the refreshment that Christ brings us as He ministers His priestly office.

Psalm 45

billmBill McCarthy speaks of his experiences in the church, with focus upon John 10:10, where the Lord Jesus says, “I am come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”  Bill talks about how that the abundant life Jesus came to give us is that which we experience in this world by following Him.

randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy examines Psalm 45 and outlines this classical romance of a Warrior-King who fights a battle to rescue his beloved woman, whom He marries and lives with in joy forever.  Randy points out how this fairy tale theme finds its reality in Christ Jesus, who rescued his people and will take them home to live with him in all eternity.
