Hebrews 3 – An OT Comparison

Allen Daniels opens services describing how the book of Hebrews has a general theme of “Better” (and is used in this book 13 times).    He begins reading in chapter 3 which has several references to Moses and then he gives background information from the books of Exodus and Numbers.  His focus was that Moses acted as a buffer between God’s wrath and the judgement of the disobedient Israelites.

Jesus, the King, upon the Throne of David

allendAllen Daniels  Isaiah 9:6-7; Luke 1:26-35; Matthew 1:21-23; Isaiah 7:14; Luke 2:49; Deut 32:7-9; Romans 9:13; Acts 2:22-38; Psalms 16:8-11; Hebrews 1:1-9

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: ….”   ” …a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son …”

  “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.”

Jesus, High Priest (by the Order of Melchizedek)

randyMc_1_cropRandy McCarthy examines the priesthood of Jesus Christ, with reference to His call by God in Psalm 110:4 as a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.  After reviewing the history of Abraham’s encounter with this mysterious priest-king in Genesis 14, Randy examines Hebrews 4:14-5:10 and notes the following characteristics of Christ’s priesthood that are foreshadowed by Melchizedek:

  1. a perpetual priesthood;
  2. one that is appointed by an oath of God;
  3. a royal priesthood – that is, Christ is a Priest-King;
  4. there is no priestly descent or succession with Christ;
  5. the blessing of Abraham by Melchizedek shows the superiority of Christ’s priesthood to that of the Levitical priesthood under the Mosaic Law;
  6. Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, further showing the superiority of Christ’s priesthood to the Levitical priesthood; and
  7. Melchizedek refreshed Abraham with bread and wine, signifying the refreshment that Christ brings us as He ministers His priestly office.
